Happy New Health Year: A Witches Brew to Beat Winter Bugs (With Stomach-Healing Side Effects!)

Licorice Root – so many health benefits I don’t know where to begin…

Happy New Year! I’m a little late to the party, but hey ho, got there in the end! I’ve been on a crazy health journey in the last 2 months, and will post on developments soon, but in the meantime here’s a cheeky little recipe I have whipped up to kick those New Year viruses out of sight!

So, I went back to work today and everyone, literally every human I came into contact with, has had or is currently suffering with some virulent cold/ flu/ throat/ chest infection bug. Having been mostly housebound for two recuperation weeks over the Christmas holiday I have thankfully avoided it’s evil clutches, and intend to stay bug free by boosting my immunity with the herbs and foods in my kitchen (especially since I’ve seen huge improvements in my condition in the last 5 days – let’s just say for now that Betaine with Pepsin supplements are involved and they are a flippin miracle…!)

Stave off the evil viruses with this witches brew I’ve concocted. The potion will soothe a sore throat, help to kill off bacteria in the respiratory tract and reduce inflammation, and has the added benefits of killing bacteria in the gut, aiding stomach healing and supporting healthy adrenal gland function. Each ingredient acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune booster. Chamomile is also good as an anti-anxiety remedy, and stimulates the gut lining to regenerate – even if you don’t have stomach issues usually, this might be useful to recover from those festive drinks and naughty food binges that can unbalance and inflame the best of guts.

If this sweet and spicy potion doesn’t knock those nasty germs out of your system, nothing will!

Jen’s Bug-Beating Healing Potion

For 2 big cups of brew

5 pieces licorice root (or 2 licorice tea teabags)
2 tbsps chamomile flowers (or 2 chamomile tea teabags)
2 tbsps cinnamon chips (or 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
1 thumb-sized piece root ginger, grated (or 1 tsp ground ginger)
1/2 tbsp marshmallow root or leaf (optional)
3 cups water

Simmer all the ingredients for 10 minutes, strain, and drink your magic brew. Drink a small cup every hour or two for maximum benefits.

Good luck dodging the space germs – and if you whip up some healing and immune boosting bone broth-based vegetable soup with a good few garlic, lemon and cayenne pepper infused meatballs thrown in for super bug beating duties, you’ll be laughing in the face of the winter bugs in no time. Honest!
